So it begins

Well, here we go. I never really imagined I would start a blog - frankly, I always thought the idea was a little too 'shallow self promotion' for my tastes. But I've been really taken lately with the quality of information and discussion going on the various political blogs that I've been reading, and I've started to think that - as far as news, media, and information dissemination go - blogs are the way of the future and represent a real democratization of mass communication. If Marshal Macluhan was right and the medium is the message, then maybe this is the beginning of a mediated direct-democracy. Maybe not - maybe its just a lot of us self-indulgent wanna-be pundits sitting comfortably on our side of the digital divide. Either way, I've decided to get my feet wet here, to get a little practice making public my views when it comes to politics (school papers tend to end up being remarkably value-free ... its a symptom of the educational structure), as well as to provide a place for me to collect the diffuse but connected threads that I see in the media and aggregate them in one place. If anyone ever reads this and feels they benefit from it, so much the better. The name of this blog is taken from Herbert Marcuse's One-Dimensional Man, and in keeping with his thinking, I hope to make this space as critical as possible, without slipping into knee-jerk ideological reaction. Here's hoping.

On a final note, I've decided to keep this blog completely anonymous.
